Aims

This Doctoral Symposium aims to:

  • Assemble the PhD students from high-ranking universities every year to build synergy and research ideas on addressing global issues;
  • Develop a platform and network advancing students’ professional development and fostering future research collaboration.

Opportunity

This doctoral symposium will provide the opportunity for selected doctoral students from six universities—The University of Chicago, Hong Kong Baptist University, The University of Michigan, Seoul National University, The University of British Columbia, and Nanyang Technological University—to present their work and engage in scholarly exchange and networking with their counterparts around the world. and networking with their counterparts around the world.

Online Non-academic Career Workshops for Doctoral Students

The University of Chicago, The University of Michigan, Seoul National University, The University of British Columbia, and Nanyang Technological University, in collaboration with Hong Kong Baptist University, are excited to present a series of online career workshops for doctoral students.

Workshop 2: Non-Academic Career Paths Friday, 15 November 2024 | 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM (Hong Kong Time) The second workshop will focus on exploring non-academic career options, such as roles in think tanks or non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Recent doctoral graduates will share their experiences and perspectives on transitioning into these alternative career paths. The format will be the same as the first workshop, with 10-minute presentations and a 30-minute Q&A. Two professionals will share their experiences and insights on pursuing non-academic career options in think tanks, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and government policy units

These workshops are part of a series derived from “International Doctoral Symposium: Global Perspectives on Social Problems, Policy, and Practice” co-organized by six major universities in the world, which aims at establishing a sustained and interactive network for doctoral students.

Doctoral Symposium:
Global Perspectives on Social Problems, Policy, and Practice

This doctoral symposium will provide the opportunity for selected doctoral students from five universities—The University of Chicago, Hong Kong Baptist University, The University of Michigan, Seoul National University, the University of British Columbia, and the Nanyang Technological University —to present their work and engage in scholarly exchange and networking with their counterparts around the world.

Up to four doctoral students from each university will be selected based on the quality of the proposal and its fit with other submissions. The symposium will include site visits to local communities experiencing, and organizations addressing, relevant contemporary social problems.

Best Paper Award

Quality papers will be selected to run for an annual best paper award, and we will seek publication outlets in internationally high-impact academic journals.
