Aims

This International Doctoral Symposium aims to:

  • Assemble the PhD students from high-ranking universities every year to build synergy and research ideas on addressing global issues;
  • Develop a platform and network advancing students’ professional development and fostering future research collaboration.

Opportunity

This International Doctoral Symposium will provide the opportunity for selected doctoral students from six universities—The University of Chicago, Hong Kong Baptist University, The University of Michigan, Seoul National University, The University of British Columbia, Nanyang Technological University, and The University of Melbourne—to present their work and engage in scholarly exchange and networking with their counterparts around the world.

International Doctoral Symposium 2026: Global Perspectives on Social Problems, Policy, and Practice Call for Papers

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at Hong Kong Baptist University is pleased to announce the International Doctoral Symposium 2026, which will take place from 9 to 13 March 2026. This global academic event will bring together doctoral students from seven leading universities: The University of Chicago, University of Michigan, Seoul National University, The University of British Columbia, Nanyang Technological University, The University of Melbourne, and Hong Kong Baptist University. The symposium provides an international platform for emerging scholars to present research, engage in scholarly exchange, and build networks across borders. This year’s theme, “Global Perspectives on Social Problems, Policy, and Practice,” addresses the complex challenges arising from globalization, urbanization, migration, and economic transformation, and their impact on social systems and governance.

Key Themes:

  • Migration, displacement, and refugees
  • Urban poverty, housing, and social and economic development
  • Children, youth, and families
  • Health and mental health
  • Philanthropy and social innovation

The five-day program will feature paper presentations, site visits to local communities and organizations, and interactive workshops on early career development and proposal writing. Selected participants will also join a sustained network of doctoral scholars through additional online sessions.

Submission Details:

Up to four doctoral students from each participating university will be selected based on proposal quality and thematic fit. Attendance at all sessions is required.

International Doctoral Symposium:

This International Doctoral Symposium will provide an opportunity for selected doctoral students from seven universities—The University of Chicago, Hong Kong Baptist University, The University of Michigan, Seoul National University, the University of British Columbia, the Nanyang Technological University, and The University of Melbourne — to present their work and engage in scholarly exchange and networking with their counterparts around the world.

Up to four doctoral students from each university will be selected based on the quality of their proposals and their alignment with other submissions. The symposium will also include site visits to local communities experiencing, and organizations addressing, relevant contemporary social problems.

Best Paper Award

Quality papers will be selected to run for an annual best paper award, and we will seek publication outlets in internationally high-impact academic journals.
